Purple Peak Adventures | About

Welcome to our website! We are Martin Critchley and Sharron Schwartz, and we live in County Donegal, Ireland. Martin holds a PhD in mining geology and is the Managing Director of ERA-Maptec, which pioneered digital mapping and remote sensing services in Ireland. Sharron holds a PhD in migration studies, and before moving to Ireland had an academic career at the University of Exeter in the UK, and has authored numerous books and papers.

We share a passion for the outdoors, and relish adventures and challenges. For the past ten years we have enjoyed travelling independently in six continents and have enormous experience trekking and mountaineering in many of the world’s great mountain ranges: the Alps, Pyrenees, Dinaric Alps, Tatras, Himalaya, Drakensburg, Atlas, Sierra Nevada, Simiens, Snowy Mountains, Adirondacks, the Rockies, the Caucasus and the Andes, as well as summiting Kilimanjaro and wilderness trekking in Chilean Patagonia, Sweden, Greenland, and Oman. During our travels we discovered that the world looks infinitely more interesting and wondrous through a camera lens.

In 2017 we set up Purple Peak Adventures to showcase our landscape photography, video and time-lapse film, and to share blogs about our adventures. The name Purple Peak Adventures was inspired by our experiences in the mountains at dawn and dusk, when the low sun angle creates striking light conditions that can turn the mountaintops purple-blue like the bloom on plums. Our photography focuses on landscapes, wildlife and culture and we strive to capture images that reflect the beauty and fragility of our planet, and our place within nature's realm. We live by our motto, ‘Love Adventure, Love Travel, Live Life’ and hope that by visiting our website, you do too!
